Background

The software presented in this document will be a web-based plagiarism detection application tailored for higher learning institutions in Tanzania. The purpose of this software is to assist these institutions to curb plagiarism by providing means of automatically detecting instances of plagiarism in various documents that are produced in these institutions.

More specifically, this software will allow relevant higher learning institution stakeholders such as students, lecturers, instructors, and researchers to upload documents that will be processed to determine the extent to which they have been plagiarized.

Furthermore, the algorithm used in this software can detect complex (or disguised) forms of plagiarism that may be achieved through techniques such as paraphrasing, and modification of word positioning. Moreover, the software will have the capability of producing a well-detailed report as an output to the end-user which will highlight portions of the input document that have been plagiarized.

In addition to that, this software will be built using open-source software components which will significantly lower the operational cost by eliminating the need for software license fees which is an added advantage when compared to most proprietary tools that currently exist in the market.
